Virtueel autisme: beeldschermen verantwoordelijk voor toename aantal kinderen met autisme?

De afgelopen jaren is het aantal kinderen die de diagnose autisme krijgen enorm gestegen. Waar er in de jaren 70 sprake was van 2 tot 5 personen per 10.000 met een diagnose autisme. Is dat momenteel gestegen naar 60 tot 100 per 10.000 mensen. Een enorme groei, waar al veel onderzoek naar is gedaan. Zo ook door twee Franse kinderpsychiaters. Zij kwamen tot de conclusie dat beeldschermen de oorzaak zijn van de toename van het aantal kinderen met autisme. De 2 Franse psychiaters spreken zelfs van virtueel autisme

Wat is autisme

Autisme.. iedereen heeft er wel eens van gehoord, maar wat is dat eigenlijk? Onze pedagoog Shanna heeft hier eerder een artikel overgeschreven, daarin legt zij aan de hand van voorbeelden uit wat autisme is en hoe om te gaan met mensen die autisme hebben. Shanna legt uit dat autisme een informatieverwerkingsstoornis is. Bij kinderen met autisme komt informatie via de zintuigen anders binnen. Alles wat zij horen, zien, proeven en ruiken komt vaak als losse delen binnen, waarvan zij niet direct het geheel zien. Er moet dus gepuzzeld worden, om al die informatie tot een geheel te krijgen. Dit zorgt vaak voor chaos in het hoofd van iemand met autisme. Ook vinden mensen met autisme het vaak lastig om betekenis aan al die binnenkomende informatie te geven.

Onderzoek virtueel autisme

Dr. Isabelle Terrasse en dr. Anne-Lise Ducanda, twee Franse kinderpsychiaters, bestudeerden kinderen in de leeftijd 0 tot 4 jaar die de diagnose autisme hadden gekregen. Het viel hen op dat kinderen veel tijd doorbrachten achter een beeldscherm. Vaak wel 6 tot 12 uur aan schermtijd per dag. Om die reden verboden zij de doelgroep die ze onderzochten, om gebruik te maken van beeldschermen. Dus geen telefoon, tv, tablet, pc etc. Na een maand waren alle op autisme lijkende symptomen verdwenen. Dr. Isabelle Terrasse en dr. Anne-Lise Ducanda spreken daarom van virtueel autisme.

Beeldschermen belemmeren de ontwikkeling

Terrasse en Ducanda stellen dat beeldschermen de hersenontwikkeling van kinderen belemmert en ervoor zorgt dat ze geen normaal sociaal leven kunnen opbouwen. In een video legt Dr. Ducanda uit dat kinderen leren door gebruik te maken van hun zintuigen. Ze voelen en proeven dingen, om zo de wereld om zich heen te ontdekken. Kinderen horen gesprekjes te voeren, om zo hun taal- en spraakvermogen te ontwikkelen. Wanneer een kind te veel achter een beeldscherm zit, raakt die ontwikkeling verstoord. Licht en geluid van een beeldscherm houdt de aandacht van een kind vast, maar stimuleert volgens Ducanda de ontwikkeling van de hersenen niet. Door het constant kijken naar een beeldscherm en het verslaafd daaraan zijn, wordt een kind geïsoleerd van menselijke interacties volgens de kinderpsychiaters. Zo wordt het voorbeeld gegeven dat wanneer jij je kind verteld dat je zijn jas aan doet, omdat jullie naar buiten gaat en terwijl je dat zegt ook daadwerkelijk de jas aan doet. Je kind zal leren wat de woorden betekenen. Wanneer dezelfde woorden worden uitgesproken in een tekenfilm op de tablet, dan zal dit niet bij je kind blijven hangen. Dit, legt Ducanda uit, omdat de betekenis van die woorden ontbreekt. Ook zullen klachten als agressie en boosheid verdwijnen, wanneer je een kind niet te veel beeldschermtijd geeft.

Kritische geluiden

Na aanleiding van dit onderzoek klinken er veel kritische geluiden. Zo zijn er veel professionals die zich afvragen hoe volledig dit onderzoek is. Autisme is een aangeboren stoornis, die niet verdwijnt. Het klinkt voor velen te mooi om waar te zijn, dat klachten/symptomen na een maand zonder beeldschermen verdwenen zijn. Hadden de kinderen die bestudeerd zijn, daadwerkelijk autisme of daarop lijkende symptomen. Daarbij vragen velen zich af in hoeverre je kan spreken van een juiste diagnose autisme als het gaat om kinderen in de leeftijd 0 t/m 4 jaar.
Wel is de term virtueel autisme interessant, want zou het kunnen gaan om een nieuwe “variant” van autisme. De symptomen komen erg overeen, maar gaat het dan nog om autisme of heeft het met iets anders te maken? Het onderzoek van dr. Isabelle Terrasse en dr. Anne-Lise Ducanda heeft in ieder geval veel stof doen opwaaien.
